Great Books
Back to Eden by Jethro Kloss - it's kinda old, and somewhat outdated, but some of the info is good. And you can find it for cheap! Simple living, simple medicine.Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew - We're looking forward to trying this as beginning gardeners. Learn to grow enough food for a family in very little space! Highly efficient and easy to manage!
Five Acres and Independence by M.G. Kains - VERY information packed, maybe somewhat outdated, but a lot of good info. Maybe more for rural living...
Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn - great tips on living frugal.
Rodale's Chemical Free Yard and Garden - Haven't gotten all the way through this one yet, but it's very well written and information packed on gardening WITHOUT herbisides, pesticides and Chemical fertilizers.
Reader's Digest Family Guide to Natural Medicine - Info packed book, and of course, well written.

Great Magazines
Country - this doesn't really tell you how to live in the country, but the pictures are great and the articles get you in the mindset for country living. Countryside - we just got our first issue last month. All reader written articles about homesteading and every aspect therein. Best animals to raise and how, beekeeping, gardening, etc, etc, etc! No color, no nonsense.
Mother Earth News - Most of you have probably heard of this one. Great info on frugal/self-sustainable living.

Great Products
Gravity fed non-electric water filter - We're investigating this now...There are a few types that are used in poverty stricken countries and some have been around for over 140yrs! Trying to find the one that will be best for us. Most are stainless steel and can filter out EVERYTHING bad (including food coloring!) Filtered water for around 2¢ a gallon! Better than bottled water at approx $1.16 gallon!Vita-Mix Blender- really aimed more at healthy eating...Big initial expense, but oh, so well worth it! 7 year warranty. We use ours at least once a week, sometimes more. Very Durable. It's a hi-power blender, but so much more. Can make nut butters, flour/bread, salsas, soups, purees, ice cream, etc. All made yourself from the freshest ingredients you have and VERY quickly!
