Director of Music
Ark and Dove Presbyterian Church (USA) in Odenton, Maryland, 20 miles south of Baltimore, is searching for an enthusiastic and creative Director of Music to lead the active adult and children’s choirs in praising and worshipping God through a high quality, diverse, and engaging music program. Ark and Dove is a vibrant, growing, open-minded 27-year old Presbyterian Church with a choir-led 9:30 am service and a band-led 11:00 am service.
The Director of Music will plan, prepare, and lead the 9:30 am worship service playing a Steinway Baby Grand piano and directing choral pieces, with occasional accompanists and guests. The Director will recruit, equip, and nurture adult and children’s choir members, and conduct the choirs during worship services and other special holiday and seasonal programs. The Director will also recruit, equip, and nurture a small orchestral ensemble of instrumentalists who accompany the choirs and present instrumental pieces.
The Director of Music will serve as a resource to the Christian Education music program, such as Vacation Bible School and midweek youth programs. The Director will also support the Director of Contemporary Music during the 11:00 am worship service, including piano and/or vocal accompaniment as needed or requested, and substitute directing as needed.
The Director of Music will be responsible for administrative duties of the music programs, such as planning the worship calendar in collaboration with the Pastors and Worship Ministry leaders, contributing articles to the Church newsletters, managing music licenses and copyrights, and overseeing the maintenance and tuning of musical instruments.
The successful candidate will have a Master’s Degree in Music or Music Education from an accredited college of university with experience with instruments beyond keyboard. Expert level capability in piano is highly desired. The Director will be fluent in and encourage engagement in diverse styles of worship music.
The Director position is half time, 19-25 hours per week, with seasonal and holiday variations. Salary is commensurate with experience and some additional benefits are offered.
