Congregation Amends Bylaws to Accommodate Restructure Plan

After two years of discussion by church officers on session, one year of tasking from the congregation in our long range plan, and four months of intensive effort by a restructure team, the congregation was briefed Nov 6, 2005, at a particularly well attended special congregational meeting, on the plan to become more of an equipping and permission giving church. The 3 pillars of the plan are:

1. Refocus the roles and responsibilities of Elders within a new ministry structure to emphasize spiritual leadership Vs committee chairmanship and inviting and equipping teams and team leaders.

2. Create Leadership Enrichment and Member Equipping Programs to help leaders and members find their call and prepare them to serve.

3. Change the structure of our church leadership to include fewer Elders and more empowered teams.

Following thorough discussion, the assembled congregation unanimously amended the church bylaws to accommodate the new structure. The 6 ministries of the new structure are:

1. Outreach & Hospitality Ministry - Created from Evangelism & Church Life functions, plus a comprehensive new Internal & External Communications function for our church.

2. Education Ministry - Created from Christian Education function, with continuing expansion of youth and adult programs.

3. Mission Ministry - Created from Mission and School of Music functions.

4. Worship Ministry - Created from Worship function, with continuing expansion.

5. Operations Ministry - Created from Building & Grounds and Administration functions, plus the Finance half of Stewardship & Finance function.

6. Discipleship & Equipping Ministry - Created from the Stewardship half of Stewardship & Finance function, plus Nominating Committee and new functions for Assimilation of New Members and Equipping of Members and Leaders.

From November 2005 to February 2006, an Implementation Planning Team, led by Rich Speir, will assist Session in creating detailed descriptions of the 6 Ministries/6 Elder positions that replace the 9 Committees/13 Elder positions and descriptions of the many specific Teams that will initially comprise those new ministries. The Implementation Planning Team will also assist with initial equipping and recommend approaches/resources for ongoing equipping and review, all to be presented at our annual congregational meeting in January and stood up in February.
